Little Updates:
Oliver's sleep issues and mood from last week have improved a bit. This week we had one emergency trip to UNC (everything was ok, more details of that are on FB if you care), 4 vials of blood drawn, 3 doctor visits and two very tired parents. Thankfully, the trip to UNC did not turn into emergency surgery, as we had thought it might. Basically, Oliver's incision from his VNS (on his chest) was significantly swollen Thursday and began to ooze puss. We knew this was the earliest sign of infection, (and since our experience with his brain surgery site getting infected) so we wanted to be as proactive as humanly possible. Nine hours in the car to be told we should use peroxide on it once a day and 'watch it closely". We are super thankful we avoided having to have the VNS removed, yet more than a little "torn out of the frame" having to make such a grueling trip to the UNC ER at 8pm...
In good news, Oliver has been much more verbal than ever before. It is just so cute and encouraging to hear him try and express himself. He is certainly experiencing many toddler melt-downs each day due to his frustration with not always being able to get out his thoughts. We are working very hard with our speech therapist to get Oliver some skills for identifying what hurts. If we can get this simple yet profound communication going, it will seriously reduce our overall stress level!
The Easter Seals walk on Saturday was a great event for the special needs community here in Wilmington. Oliver had a major melt-down, which we think was from being over stimulated. There were so many people, loud music, clowns, etc. Even though we didn't stay long, we were able to help with their fundraising efforts, which was the goal :)
